Up-gradation of Medical Institutions under PMSSY

PMSSY also envisaged up-gradation of several existing medical institutions in different states in the country. The following 13 existing medical institutions were identified in the first phase for such upgradation :

PHASE I

  5. Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi
  6. Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad
  7. Sri Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences,Tirupati
  8. Government Medical College, Salem
  9. Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi
  10. BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad
  11. Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore
  12. Grant Medical College & Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai
  13. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram

Initially the estimated outlay for upgradation was 120 crores per institution, of which 100 crore was to be borne by the Central Government and the remaining by respective State Government. In view of the cost escalation, the outlay now has been revised to 150 crores per institution, with Rs. 125 crore as the share of Central Government.The current status of the upgradation of medical institutions under PMSSY is

2nd Phase

In Phase II, 6 institutions have also been included for upgradation under PMSSY. Out of 6 Medical College institutions taken up for up-gradation in the second phase, civil work started at the following four medical colleges and progress is as follows:

At Nagpur Medical College, up-gradation programme involves only procurement of equipments and entire procurement work is being undertaken by the Institute/State Government. In respect of Madurai Medical College, due to change in location for the new Super Specialty Block, plan had to be modified. DPR has been approved by PMC on 29 July 2013 and work is expected to start after tendering process.

Phase III

Initially it was proposed to upgrade 7 more existing medical college institutions in the third phase of PMSSY. However, considering large number of requests from elected public representatives and State Governments for up-gradation of their medical colleges, this Ministry has revised the proposal to take up 38 medical college institutions in the third phase of PMSSY, to provide adequate healthcare facilities to cope with the increasing number of critical care cases in many States including North Eastern States. EFC considered the proposal in its meeting held on 11th July, 2013 and also approved inclusion of Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, making the total number as 39 GMC for up gradation under Ph.III of PMSSY.
In the 3rd phase of PMSSY, it is proposed to upgrade the following 39 existing medical college institutions:
